DJI Launches the Mavic 3 Enterprise for Public Safety, Inspections, and Night Ops

After months of rumors and leaks, today DJI has launched the Mavic 3 Enterprise.

DJI Enterprise - Introducing the Mavic 3 Enterprise Series

The Mavic 3 was launched late last year to a great deal of buzz and fanfare.

An Enterprise edition has been anticipated ever since, with drone industry insiders sharing leaked photos and even DJI accidentally (or on purpose?) showing a drone that seemed to be the Mavic 3E in a joke video it released on April Fool’s Day this year.

The new enterprise drone from DJI has the same compact, foldable design the Mavic series is known for, and comes in two different models:

  • Mavic 3E—has a zoom camera and a wide-angle camera.
  • Mavic 3T—has the same zoom camera as the 3E, a different wide-angle camera, and a thermal camera.

The 3T is essentially an upgrade for the 3E, providing thermal sensing for those who need it, like building inspectors looking for energy leakage from roofs or windows, or firefighters.

Both drones also come with a loudspeaker upgrade, a feature that may be appealing to law enforcement or others working in public safety.

Using drones as a flying megaphone first got traction in the beginning of the pandemic, when law enforcement throughout the world began using drones with loudspeakers to ask crowds to disburse in order to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Specs and Features for the Mavic 3E

The Mavic 3 Enterprise comes with a robust list of features designed to support a range of commercial operations.

According to DJI, the primary use cases for the 3E are firefighting, search and rescue, inspections, and night operations.

Its camera has 56x zoom, which means it could be useful for outdoor inspections that require flying at some distance from the object being inspected. It also comes with an RTK module that will be  useful for surveying and mapping, since it provides centimeter-level precision for those activities.

Here are the main specs for the Mavic 3E:

  • Wide camera. 20 MP wide-angle camera with 4/3” CMOS sensor and a mechanical shutter.
  • Tele camera. 12MP camera with 56x hybrid zoom and an Equivalent Focal Length of 162mm.
  • Flight time. Maximum of 45 minutes.
  • Obstacle avoidance. Wide-angle lenses on all sides of the drone and APAS 5.0 provide omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, making it possible to have zero blind spots. Pilots can adjust proximity alarms and braking distance for operations in different types of environments.
  • Transmission. DJI O3 Enterprise transmission.

Specs for the Mavic 3T are the same as the 3E, except that it comes with a thermal camera and the wide camera is different.

Here are the specs for the wide camera and the thermal camera:

  • Wide camera. 48MP wide-angle camera with a 1/2” CMOS sensor and an Equivalent Focal Length of 24mm.
  • Thermal camera. 640 × 512 px thermal resolution with a DFOV of 61°and an Equivalent Focal Length of 40mm.

Optional upgrades to both models include:

  • Loudspeaker. High-volume loudspeaker.
  • RTK. Centimeter-level positioning provided via the RTK Module or the D-RTK 2 Mobile Station.
  • Battery charging hub. 100W for fast recharging.
  • RC Pro Enterprise. Portable remote controller with a 1,000-nit high-brightness screen for clear visibility in direct sunlight, a built-in microphone for clear communication, and 1.5-hour 65W fast charging.

Features for Specific Industries

Depending on which model you choose, the 3E and 3T have several features aimed at supporting different kinds of uses.

Surveying

The 3E’s mechanical shutter helps prevent motion blur and supports rapid 0.7-second interval shooting. Given the drone’s long battery life of 45 minutes, if you go with the RTK upgrade you can use it to complete mapping missions over areas as large as two square kilometers with a single battery, and without the need for Ground Control Points.

Night Operations

The 3E’s wide camera comes with large 3.3μm pixels that, together with its intelligent low-light mode, can provide significantly improved performance in dim conditions. This could prove useful for search and rescue missions at night or other types of work that requires night flying,

An additional upgrade to help with night ops is the RC Pro Enterprise, which is a portable remote controller that has a 1,000-nit high-brightness screen for clear visibility in the dark, or in direct sunlight.

Inspections

The zoom camera that comes on both the 3E and the 3T is clearly made to support inspection work, since it allows inspectors to collect clear images while flying at a distance from the object they’re inspecting.

And the 3T’s thermal camera could prove useful for roof inspections or other types of building inspections where inspectors are looking for signs of energy leakage in the form of excess thermal readings.

Firefighting

Clearly, the 3T is made to help with firefighting in mind. Its thermal camera supports point and area temperature measurements, high temperature alerts, color palettes, and isotherms. Another feature that will prove useful for firefighters is the 3T’s ability to provide a side-by-side view of the thermal and the zoom camera for greater situational awareness during active operations.

DJI is selling the Mavic 3 Enterprise in four different combos—two for the 3D and two for the 3T.
