Las Vegas Drone Laws — Recreational vs. Commercial

The first thing to understand about flying a drone in Las Vegas (or any city for that matter) is that under federal FAA regulations, you are either operating recreationally or commercially.

• Recreational drone pilots fall under the FAA’s recreational flyer rules, which are laid out here. Make sure your aircraft is registered and you complete The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), which are both required by the FAA.
• Commercial drone pilots fall under the FAA’s Part 107 regulations, which require passing a multiple-choice test and becoming an FAA-certified drone pilot. More information on the drone certification process over here.

Drone operators are no longer required to independently contact air traffic control when flying within five miles of an airport. Instead, both recreational and commercial flyers can use the automated LAANC system to request airspace authorization to fly in controlled airspace around and above many airports. If you’re operating in Class B, C, D, or E controlled airspace, you’ll need to request airspace authorization. You may do this through LAANC or through FAADroneZone in areas where LAANC is not available.

Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area  consists of large rock formations located in Clark County, Nevada. The canyon is known for its stunning red walls that are over 3,000 feet tall. The stark contrast between the rocks and the surrounding desert landscape creates a phenomenal view that would look great in any drone footage. It is important to note that although drones are allowed here, they are prohibited over the designated wilderness areas.

3 — Seven Magic Mountains

Seven Magic Mountains is a unique art exhibit located south of Las Vegas near the Jean Dry Lake. It features seven painted and stacked boulders that stand 35 feet tall. The piece was created by internationally renowned Swiss artist Ugo Rondiones. The rocks are painted with vibrant colors, which makes them stand out against the surrounding landscape. 4 — Lake Las Vegas

Lake Las Vegas is a 320-acre artificial lake located in Henderson, Nevada. The area has been the center of a large development by various resort groups. Potosi Mountain South is a peak at the top of Potosi Mountain just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is apart of the Spring Mountain Range and has an elevation of 8,517 feet. It is important to note that there are FM radio towers on the adjacent peak. Please stay away from these towers and always remain vigilant.
