Dallas Drone Laws — Recreational vs. Commercial

The first thing to understand about flying a drone in Dallas (or any city for that matter) is that under federal FAA regulations, you are either operating recreationally or commercially.

• Recreational drone pilots fall under the FAA’s recreational flyer rules, which are laid out here. Make sure your aircraft is registered and you complete The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), which are both required by the FAA.
• Commercial drone pilots fall under the FAA’s Part 107 regulations, which require passing a multiple-choice test and becoming an FAA-certified drone pilot. More information on the drone certification process over here.

Drone operators are no longer required to independently contact air traffic control when flying within five miles of an airport. Instead, both recreational and commercial flyers can use the automated LAANC system to request airspace authorization to fly in controlled airspace around and above many airports. If you’re operating in Class B, C, D, or E controlled airspace, you’ll need to request airspace authorization. You may do this through LAANC or through FAADroneZone in areas where LAANC is not available.

Lake Cliff Park is a 45-acre park located within close proximity to downtown Dallas in the historic district. The park was originally opened as a private amusement park back in 1906 and was later purchased by the City of Dallas in 1914. The park features a small lake, a rose garden, and a stone pergola. Behind the lake is the city skyline, making it a great location for drone footage.

White Rock Lake Park is a large recreation area located in northeast Dallas, Texas. Most of the area consists of White Rock Lake. The lake is a man-made reservoir that was created by damming the White Rock Creek. The lake used to be large plots of farming land before it was made into the reservoir. The surface area of the lake is 1,015 acres, providing plenty of room to fly a drone. The vast views of the lake, wooded areas, and the surrounding area provide the perfect mix for a great drone shoot.

The Greater Southwest Aero Modelers AMA Field is located in Fort Worth, Texas near the Trinity River. The club was established in 1972 and is made up of a diverse mix of aviation hobbyists. 5 — Richland-Chambers Reservoir

The Richland-Chambers Reservoir was created by the impoundment of Richland Creek and Chambers Creek in 1982. It is the third-largest inland reservoir with a surface area of 41,356-acres. Recreation at the lake includes fishing, swimming, boating, and other outdoor activities. There are two islands in the northern section of the lake and train tracks on the western side. A unique aspect of the lake is the shores are not overdeveloped. Much of the surrounding area is farmland and a nature preserve. This is a great location for flying a drone that provides a lot of diversity.
