DJI Launches the Matrice 4, The 2nd Ever Tri-Camera Drone
BY Zacc Dukowitz
8 January 2025We’re just one week into 2025 and DJI has already launched a new drone—the Matrice 4 series.
The series includes the Matrice 4E (for Enterprise), and the Matrice 4T (for Thermal).
Historically, Matrice drones were big, heavy-lift platforms. The Matrice 3D—the last to be launched in the Matrice line—broke with this trend, and was a compact, lightweight drone.
The Matrice 4 continues this pattern. It weighs less than three pounds, and is packed with features to make it a solid choice for the rugged work in search and rescue, industrial inspections, and public safety for which Matrices are known.
It also has a 15.5 mile transmission range and a 49-minute battery life.

In its general form, the new Matrice looks a lot like the Mavic 3, except that the M4 carries an RTK module.
But the two drones aren’t just similar in their bodies—they also carry a tri-camera payload.
And this makes them unique in the drone world. The Mavic 3 was the ever first tri-camera drone, and the Matrice 4 is now the second.
Matrice 4 Specs & Features
Though small, the Matrice 4 is a powerful enterprise drone made for precision operations.
It comes with cutting-edge technology, including advanced AI recognition and high-resolution sensors, making it a good option for a range of professional applications, from surveying, mapping, to search and rescue, to detailed powerline inspections.

Matrice 4 Specs
Here are all the major specs for the Matrice 4:
- Camera system. Tri-camera setup with wide-angle (24mm), medium tele (70mm), and tele (168mm) cameras, all 48MP
- Weight. 2.69 pounds (with propellers)
- Battery life. 49 minutes max flight time
- Max forward flight speed: 47 mph
- Transmission range. Up to 15.5 miles with DJI’s O4 Enterprise system, which has a 20 MB/s download bandwidth

Data is all that really matters when it comes to enterprise drones—data, and how easy it is to collect that data.
The Matrice 4 is robust on the data collection front, coming with special sensors and measurement features to help inspectors and other professionals get the information they need in the field. And it has intelligent features to make it easy to fly, pairing sophisticated data collection with high ease-of-use.
Matrice 4 Sensors and Measurement
Here are the key sensors and measurement features found on the Matrice 4:
- Laser range finder. Up to 1.1 mile range, ±(0.2 + 0.0015 × D) accuracy
- NIR auxiliary light. 6° FOV, 328 feet illumination distance
- DJI RTK module. Built-in RTK module with L5 frequency band support
- View system. 5-directional vision assist view system with downward vision
Matrice 4 Intelligent Features
The Matrice 4 has cutting-edge AI and other intelligent features. Here are the top ones to know about:
- Built-in AI model for vehicle, vessel, and subject detection
- Smart 3D Capture for detailed measurements and modeling
- Electronic dehazing with three modes
The Matrice 4’s Tri-Camera Payload
The Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Pro were the first drones ever with a tri-camera payload.
And the Matrice 4 is the second. Also, just like the Mavic 3T enterprise drone, the Matrice 4T adds a thermal sensor to the drone’s payload.

The Matrice 4
Tri-Camera Systems on the Matrice 4 vs. the Mavic 3 Pro
The Matrice 4’s tri-camera system comes with:
- Wide-angle camera. 1/1.3″ CMOS, 48MP, f/1.7, 24mm equivalent
- Medium tele camera. 1/1.3″ CMOS, 48MP, f/2.8, 70mm equivalent
- Tele camera. 1/1.5″ CMOS, 48MP, f/2.8, 168mm equivalent
And the Mavic 3 Pro’s tri-camera system comes with:
- Wide-angle camera. 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad wide-angle camera
- Medium tele camera. 70mm 48MP 3x zoom medium telephoto lens
- Tele camera. 166mm 12MP 7x zoom telephoto
Here’s a chart comparing the two, with the thermal sensor included:
| Camera | DJI Matrice 4 | DJI Mavic 3 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Wide-Angle | 1/1.3″ CMOS, 48MP, f/1.7, 24mm equivalent | 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad, 20MP, f/2.8-f/11, 24mm equivalent |
| Medium Tele | 1/1.3″ CMOS, 48MP, f/2.8, 70mm equivalent | 1/1.3″ CMOS, 48MP, 70mm equivalent |
