Netflix’s new crime drama “Adolescence” is making waves with its innovative one-shot filming technique—each hour-long episode is a single shot, which required incredible planning and coordination to pull off. Despite the challenges of filming in a single shot they were still able to incorporate drones into the production. In episode two, we see a jaw-dropping drone sequence that is the focus of the post above.
The seamless transition from ground to aerial view covers 0.3 miles, showcasing exceptional coordination. To get this shot, Director Philip Barantini’s team attaches the camera to a drone mid-scene, which then flies across town before being caught by crew members for a close-up of actor Stephen Graham. This technical marvel, achieved without cuts, has left viewers stunned and solidified the show’s position as Netflix’s #1 in multiple countries.

Skydio Has Sold Less than 50,000 Drones Since Opening

Credit: Skydio
A recent Bloomberg report reveals that Skydio has produced only 45,000 drones since its inception a decade ago. For comparison, DJI is thought to make the same number of drones in just a few weeks. In 2023, the company pivoted away from consumer drones in 2023 to concentrate on military and commercial applications—but this change in focus has yet to yield significant production increases. What Skydio’s production numbers seem to reveal is that, despite raising $732 million in funding and being valued at $2.2 billion, American drone makers continue to face an uphill battle in competing with Chinese manufacturers.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Boosts Hopes for BVLOS Rule Amid FAA Delays

After the FAA missed its September 2024 deadline for delivering a Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) rule, there has been uncertainty in the drone industry about when—or even if—the rule will be released. But recent comments from U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s have many feeling optimistic. During his senate confirmation hearing, Duffy emphasized the urgency of getting the rule out, saying that the FAA needed to provide “clarity” to commercial drone operators about BVLOS operations. Industry stakeholders see BVLOS as crucial for an array of commercial applications, from delivery to inspections. Despite the new optimism, it may still be some time before we see a BVLOS rule enacted.
