Parrot Unveils ANAFI Thermal: Ultra-Compact Thermal Imaging Drone

BY Isabella Lee
24 April 2019

Parrot’s new ultra-compact Parrot ANAFI Thermal drone is equipped with thermal imaging capabilities to meet the needs of professionals in a wide variety of industries. This new drone will be a valuable tool in the hands of firefighters, police officers, energy providers, and many other professionals.

The ability to send a drone into a hazardous area to collect thermal data has improved operations and minimized risk in typically dangerous jobs, such as powerline inspections and search and rescue missions. We’ll talk more about the potential uses for thermal imaging drones in this article. Plus, we’ll investigate the drone’s new features and see how the ANAFI Thermal compares to the DJI Mavic Enterprise Dual.

ANAFI Thermal Revolutionizes Thermal Imaging with Advanced Features

The ANAFI Thermal is a choice tool for professionals looking to easily switch between 4k HD video, RGB, and thermal imaging views. The drone utilizes Parrot’s successful ANAFI drone platform and equips it with a built-in 4K HDR camera with a 21-megapixel Sony sensor, as well as a FLIR® radiometric thermal-imaging camera, complete with 160×120 resolution and a temperature range of 14°F to 752°F (-10°C to 400°C).

The ANAFI Thermal is designed to profoundly revolutionize the way individuals in a wide variety of industries and trades operate, offering professionals a complete solution that adapts perfectly to their required needs.

Here are a few unique features of the ANAFI Thermal that stood out to us:

  • Lighter and smaller than other commercial drones: ANAFI Thermal is 315 grams, 10 grams lighter than previous ANAFI drones and 2 centimeters smaller with an ultra-compact, folding design for easy storage and portability.
  • Longer flight times: Parrot advertises a 26-minute flight time for the ANAFI Thermal (one minute longer than previous ANAFI drones), and a 78-minute cumulative flight time between the three batteries that come with the drone.
  • 3X digital zoom and 180° gimbal rotation to get the images you need: A 3X digital zoom allows pilots to examine hard-to-access areas without taking unnecessary risks. The drone’s visible and thermal light spectrum cameras are stabilized on three axes, allowing for sharp videos and clear pictures in any flight conditions.
  • Multiple views for data collection: With the FreeFlight 6 app, operators can easily switch between 4K HD video, RGB, and thermal imaging view. Images from the visible and invisible light spectrum can be viewed, analyzed and even merged with the app.
  • Ability to observe at-risk or difficult-to-access areas from a safe distance: The Parrot Skycontroller 3 remote control provides a reliable Wi-Fi connection for over one mile, meaning operators can use the drone while maintaining a safe distance from at-risk or difficult-to-access areas.

Comparison: ANAFI Thermal vs. DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual

The Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual, released in October 2018, is another portable drone designed for the commercial sector. Like the ANAFI Thermal, the Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual is also equipped with a dual visual and thermal camera.

ANAFI Thermal v Mavic Enterprise Dual

Two unique features of the ANAFI Thermal involve the gimbal and visual camera. The ANAFI Thermal can produce still photos with 21 MP resolution at a wide angle. Additionally, the ANAFI Thermal’s unique gimbal system allows it to tilt all the way up and all the way down, whereas the Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual can tilt all the way down but has a limited range when tilting upward. These features on the ANAFI Thermal may enable operators to capture a greater range of imagery than they’d be able to with alternative drones.

The foldable design isn’t new, with foldable drones increasing in popularity ever since the launch of the DJI Mavic series. Portability has become somewhat of an expectation for new commercial drones. Keeping with the status quo, the ANAFI Thermal has a lightweight body and foldable arms that make it easy to transport. Stepping up from the competition, the drone is also substantially lighter, at just 315 grams, than comparable drone models.

Uses for Thermal Imaging Drones

The advancements in drone technology, particularly in the field of thermal imaging, have benefited a wide variety of professionals, from rescue service providers and experts in civil security to public works professionals, energy providers, and environmental preservation organizations.

Some use cases we’ve seen include:

  • In construction, survey building thermography allows inspectors to determine where there might be excess heat, or where heat might be escaping.
  • In public safety, drones equipped with thermal cameras provide an aerial view and make warm objects—such as a missing person—stand out during surveillance.
  • In the energy sector, thermal cameras can measure hot and cold spots on powerlines and pipelines to detect damage, breakage, or other issues that may require maintenance.
  • In agriculture, thermal drone sensors are used to observe, count, and even determine the health of crops.

The robust mix of features, performance, and software capabilities of the ANAFI Thermal make it a suitable tool for use cases similar to these. If you’re interested in other ways professionals use thermal imaging drones, check out our article 7 Ways to Make Money with Aerial Thermography.
