BY Tres Crow
31 July 2020

If you’ve ever wondered how the Australian government keeps tabs on landfill companies, this week’s news roundup has the content you need! And if that wasn’t enough, we also have an update from The Drone Girl about the NYC Drone Film Festival, and a list of the best drone photography of July from the UAV Coach community.

Let’s get linking!

2020 NYC Drone Film Festival Goes Virtual

This is a photoshopped image. No laws were broken during the creation of this image.

This probably won’t come as a surprise given the havoc COVID-19 has wreaked in New York City, and the subsequent rescheduling of the event, but the 6th annual NYC Drone Film Festival is going all virtual this year. The New York City Drone Film Festival is the world’s first event exclusively dedicated to celebrating the art of drone cinematography. The festival offers an international platform for filmmakers from every corner of the globe to exhibit their work in front of industry professionals and the drone community. While going virtual certainly changes things, the drone community will still get to view all the amazing submissions, so stay tuned for more info!

Not only do Australians have to worry about venomous snakes, scorpions, and bird-eating spiders, but apparently they have several rogue landfills polluting their countryside too. Fortunately, the Australian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) flew some drones over the offending dumps and gathered the evidence they needed to slap them with a fine. Add another novel use for drones to the list!

The popular drone management software Kittyhawk just released a report about the way their users are using their platform, which includes this tasty bit of data: LAANC authorizations have cruised up 100% in the last year. Given that over 40% of LAANC authorizations happen through Kittyhawk, this seems like a reliable source for over-all industry data.
