8/1/2019 Update: DJI’s surprise launch of their FPV System came sooner than anticipated on 7/31/2019, and it’s available for purchase here.

DJI has filed three equipment authorizations with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), signaling that they’re about to launch some new products.

Based on the filings, the new products will be for FPV drone racing, but it’s unclear whether or not DJI will launch an actual racing drone. The three filings include an FPV Air Unit transmitter, FPV remote controller, and FPV goggles.

None of the filings are for an actual drone, but with these racing components already in the works, we don’t want to rule out the possibility of a DJI racing drone launching in the near future. DJI clearly intends to get more involved in the FPV drone racing world.

New FPV Drone Racing Components From DJI

Here’s what we know about the FPV products DJI filed with the FCC:

1. The DJI FPV Air Unit is a transmitter similar to the Ocusync Air Unit, but with improved specs and smaller dimensions.

This new DJI FPV Air Unit is about ⅔ the size of DJI’s existing OcuSync Air Unit. The FCC documents specify the dimensions of the new FPV Air Unit as 44mm(L) x 37.8mm(W) x 14.4mm(H) compared to the OcuSync Air Unit at 72mm(L) x 33mm(W) x 14mm(H). Since the OcuSync Air Unit did not catch on in the drone racing scene, it’s expected that the new FPV Air Unit will also have improved low-latency for faster transmitting.

2. The DJI FPV Remote Controller will operate at a 5.8G: 5725~5875 MHz frequency.

The documents state that the controller has the ability to work in 2.4G and 5G 4 frequency bands: 5150~5250MHz, 5250~5350MHz, 5470~5725MHz, 5725~5850MHz. However, the frequency of the product sold in U.S. will be programmed and locked to work only in 5725~5850MHz.

3. The DJI FPV Goggles will be more compact than the DJI Goggles and DJI Goggles RE.

Based on images and dimensions provided in the FCC documents, the new racing goggles will be smaller than DJI’s previous goggles. The new design leaves behind the boxy shape for a rounded shape more naturally fitting to the face.

4. DJIs new FPV products will launch in September.

Drone racing enthusiasts won’t have to wait long to get their hands on DJI’s new racing components. The FCC filings reveal that DJI’s new Air Unit, remote controller, and goggles will launch sometime in September.

DJI already has a line of racing components called Snail. The line includes motors, quick release propellers, and controllers. The new line of FPV products we expect to see in September may be an expansion of DJI’s FPV lineup.
